Bermuda grass mowing
Bermuda is the fine-bladed grass in most sunny yards around Frisco. It grows fast in the heat and is usually kept short, so it needs cutting often.
How to tell it's Bermuda
Narrow blades, low and thick, and it likes full sun. It spreads by runners above and below the ground. That's how it fills in bare spots, and also how it ends up in your beds and across the sidewalk. It turns tan in winter and greens back up in spring.
Height
Most North Texas lawn guides put Bermuda at about 1 to 2 inches. In summer it can outgrow that in a few days. Since you don't want to take off more than about a third of the blade at once, Bermuda in summer usually means weekly. If you like yours at a certain height, tell me.
Through the year
- Spring: it greens up as the ground warms, and grows quickly after rain.
- Summer: fastest growth. Weekly is usually the right call.
- Fall: it slows down, and every other week can be enough for some yards.
- Winter: dormant and tan, hardly growing.
Edging Bermuda
Bermuda runners are a big reason edging is part of every visit. Cut back regularly, they're easy. Left alone for a season, they take over the edge of the driveway.
Mowing only. No fertilizing, weed control, overseeding, aeration or sod. I keep it cut, trimmed and edged.
Questions
How often should Bermuda be mowed?
Weekly in spring and summer for most yards. In fall, every other week can be enough. Ask me about yours.
Can you do something about the weeds?
No. I don't do weed control or fertilizing. Mowing at a steady height does help the grass hold its own.
Is my lawn Bermuda or St. Augustine?
Bermuda has fine, narrow blades and grows low and thick. St. Augustine has wide, flat blades and thick runners on top of the soil. If you're not sure, mention it when you ask for a quote.
