Zoysia grass mowing

Zoysia is the dense, soft grass that turns a lawn into a thick carpet. It grows slower than Bermuda but is tough to cut cleanly. Coopers Mowing keeps it mowed weekly or every other week.

How to spot Zoysia

Zoysia forms a very dense lawn that feels soft and cushioned to walk on. Depending on the variety, its blades can be fine or a bit wider, and they tend to feel stiffer than Bermuda. It is less common in North Texas than Bermuda and St. Augustine, but you will find it in some yards around Frisco and nearby. It handles full sun and some light shade, and like the other warm-season grasses, it goes tan and dormant in winter.

How Zoysia is usually mowed

Zoysia is generally kept on the shorter side. Many guides put it at roughly 1 to 2.5 inches, depending on the variety and how much sun it gets. Zoysia in shadier spots generally does better toward the higher end of that range.

The general one-third rule still applies: do not remove more than about a third of the blade in one cut. Because Zoysia grows slower than Bermuda, it can take a little longer to outgrow its range. That is one reason some smaller Zoysia yards can be a fit for the every other week plan outside of peak growth. In the heart of summer, weekly mowing is often still the cleaner choice. Ask Joseph about your yard.

Why Zoysia benefits from sharp blades

Zoysia's density is what makes it look so good, and it is also what makes it tough to cut. All those tightly packed blades push back. A sharp blade slices through them cleanly. A dull blade tends to tear and shred the tips, and torn tips turn brown, giving the lawn a dull, frayed look a day or two after the cut. Clean, regular cuts are a big part of keeping Zoysia looking like a carpet.

Slow growth, slow recovery

Zoysia tends to build up thatch over time, and because it grows slowly, it can be slow to recover from damage like scalping. That makes steady, moderate cuts more important than catching up after the lawn has gotten too tall. A regular schedule avoids the big cuts that leave Zoysia stressed.

Same full visit

A Zoysia yard gets the full routine on every visit: mow front and back, string trim around beds, fences and trees, edge along the sidewalk and driveway, and blow off the hard surfaces.

Mowing only. Coopers Mowing does not fertilize, treat weeds, dethatch, aerate or lay sod. The job is keeping your Zoysia cut, trimmed and edged.

02 FAQ

Quick answers

All questions
Is Zoysia mowed like Bermuda?

They are similar in that both are generally kept on the shorter side. Zoysia grows slower and is denser, so clean, sharp cuts matter even more.

Can you dethatch my Zoysia?

No. Dethatching, aeration and other lawn treatments are outside what Coopers Mowing does. It is mowing only.

Is every other week enough for Zoysia?

Sometimes, especially in slower growing months or for a smaller yard. In peak summer growth, weekly is often the better fit. Tell Joseph about your yard and ask.
