St. Augustine mowing

St. Augustine is the wide-bladed grass you see under shade trees all over North Texas. It is commonly kept taller than Bermuda and does not like being cut short. Coopers Mowing keeps it mowed weekly or every other week.

How to spot St. Augustine

St. Augustine has wide, flat, coarse blades and thick runners that spread along the top of the soil. It feels spongy underfoot compared to Bermuda. It handles shade better than most warm-season grasses, which is why it is so common in established neighborhoods in The Colony, Plano and older parts of McKinney, where big trees shade the yard for part of the day. Like Bermuda, it goes tan and dormant in winter and greens up in spring.

Why St. Augustine is kept taller

St. Augustine is generally mowed higher than Bermuda. Many North Texas lawn guides put it at roughly 3 to 4 inches. Taller blades shade the soil, help it hold moisture in summer heat, and give the grass more leaf to feed itself, which matters most in shady spots where it gets less sun.

Cutting St. Augustine too short is one of the most common ways it gets stressed. A low cut can expose the runners, brown the lawn, and leave it thin and patchy. The general one-third rule applies here too: do not take off more than about a third of the blade at once. In the fast part of the growing season, weekly mowing is usually the easier way to stay inside it.

A clean cut on thick blades

St. Augustine blades are wide and thick. A clean cut slices them neatly, while a ragged cut tears the tips, which then brown and lose more water. Clean, regular cuts are one of the small things that keep a St. Augustine lawn looking green between visits.

Shade, trees and trimming

Where there is St. Augustine, there are usually trees. That means trunks, roots and beds to work around, which is where string trimming comes in. Every visit includes trimming around beds, fences and trees, plus edging along the sidewalk and driveway. St. Augustine runners grow on top of the ground and will creep across concrete if the edge is not kept up.

If you have a preference

Mowing only. Coopers Mowing does not fertilize, treat weeds, treat for insects or lawn disease, or lay sod. The job is keeping your St. Augustine cut, trimmed and edged.

02 FAQ

Quick answers

All questions
Should St. Augustine be cut short in summer?

Generally no. Most guidance for North Texas says to keep it on the taller side, especially in summer heat. Taller grass shades the soil and handles stress better.

My St. Augustine has brown patches. Can you treat it?

No. Coopers Mowing is mowing only, with no insect, disease or weed treatment. For brown patches, a lawn treatment specialist is the right call.

Weekly or every other week for St. Augustine?

In the main growing season, weekly is usually the better fit. In slower months, or for a smaller yard, every other week can work. Ask Joseph about your yard.
