Bermuda grass mowing

Bermuda is the full-sun, fast-growing grass found all over North Texas. It looks its best with frequent, even cuts. Coopers Mowing keeps it mowed on a weekly or every other week plan.

How to spot Bermuda

Bermuda has fine, narrow blades and grows into a dense, low carpet. It loves full sun and handles Texas heat and drought well, which is why it shows up in so many Frisco front yards, parks and sports fields. It spreads by runners above and below ground, so it fills in thin spots on its own, and it also spreads into places you do not want it, like beds and sidewalks. In winter it goes dormant and turns tan, then greens back up as the soil warms in spring.

Why Bermuda likes frequent mowing

Bermuda is generally kept short compared to other lawn grasses. Many North Texas lawn guides put it at roughly 1 to 2 inches. Because it sits that low and grows fast in the heat, it does not take long to outgrow that range in summer.

That is where the one-third rule comes in. As a general guideline, do not cut off more than about a third of the blade at one time. Taking off too much at once can scalp Bermuda down to the brown stems, and it can take days to green back up. Mowing more often keeps each cut small. For most Bermuda lawns in the growing season, that makes weekly mowing the natural fit.

Bermuda through the seasons

  • Spring: green-up starts as the soil warms, and growth picks up fast after spring rain.
  • Summer: peak growth. Weekly cuts help keep the lawn even and inside the one-third rule.
  • Fall: growth slows as nights cool, and every other week can be enough for some yards.
  • Winter: dormant and tan, with very little growth.

Edging matters with Bermuda

Bermuda runners are aggressive. They creep over the sidewalk and the edges of the driveway and push into flower beds. That is why every visit includes edging along the sidewalk and driveway and string trimming around beds, fences and trees. Cutting those lines back regularly is much easier than letting Bermuda take over the concrete.

If you have a preference

Every lawn is a little different. If there is a height you like for your Bermuda, mention it to Joseph when you ask for a quote.

Mowing only. Coopers Mowing does not fertilize, treat weeds, overseed, aerate or lay sod. The job is keeping your Bermuda cut, trimmed and edged.

02 FAQ

Quick answers

All questions
How often should Bermuda be mowed?

In the main growing season, most Bermuda lawns do best with a weekly cut because the grass grows fast and is kept short. In slower months, every other week can be enough. Ask Joseph about your yard.

Can you help with weeds in my Bermuda?

No. Coopers Mowing is mowing only, so there is no weed treatment or fertilizing. Regular mowing at a steady height is still one of the best habits for a healthy lawn.

Is my lawn Bermuda or St. Augustine?

Bermuda has fine, narrow blades and a low, dense look. St. Augustine has wide, flat blades and thick runners on top of the soil. Not sure? Mention it when you ask for a quote.
