Zoysia grass mowing
Zoysia makes a thick, soft lawn. It grows slower than Bermuda, but it's so dense that it's hard to cut clean.
Spotting Zoysia
It's very dense and feels cushioned underfoot. The blades are a little stiffer than Bermuda. You don't see it as often as Bermuda or St. Augustine around here, but some yards have it.
Height and how often
Zoysia is usually kept around 1 to 2.5 inches depending on the variety, and a little higher in shade. It grows slower than Bermuda, so a smaller Zoysia yard can sometimes do fine on every other week outside of summer. In summer, weekly is usually still better.
Why it's hard to cut
All those tightly packed blades push back. A dull blade tears Zoysia instead of cutting it, and torn tips turn brown a day or two later, so the whole lawn looks dull. Zoysia also recovers slowly if it gets scalped. Steady, regular cuts are better for it than letting it get tall and taking a lot off.
Mowing only. No fertilizing, weed control, dethatching, aeration or sod.
Questions
Is Zoysia mowed like Bermuda?
Close. Both are kept on the shorter side. Zoysia is denser and grows slower.
Can you dethatch my Zoysia?
No. Dethatching and aeration aren't something I do.
